Six of our students: Year 8 Darcy B, Year 9 Luka T and Edward P, and Year 10 Amelia B, Dayangka N and Francesca C, took part in the local heat of the Rotary Young Chef competition, held at the school in January.

Andrew Bourne, a top London chef and now owner and head chef at the Alexander Court Hotel and Rosemary Knight, a home economics specialist, returned as the two professional judges. Mr Bourne praised the six entrants and said that the standard was so high that judging came down to the finer points awarded for details! The competition involves a fully costed two course meal elegantly displayed and presented with menu, napkins and cutlery. Mr Bourne also praised the class teacher, Mrs Thorpe, and said that the standard in the kitchens inspired him with great confidence.

The winner was Darcy, whose ambitious menu comprised a freshly marinated sesame steak with white rice topped with a spring onion garnish, whilst his dessert was a chewy sweet meringue topped with fresh summer fruits and a sweet and tart coulis. Darcy will represent the school at the next stage of the competition.

Amelia was the competition runner up and Francesca was the second runner up. All the entrants were presented with certificates and the three winners received a certificate, their expenses and a prize.
